28 Day Mobile Recharge Plans May End: 30-Day Plans Could Soon Become Standard

The Mobile Recharge Problem

Users are demanding the complete removal of 28 day recharge plans.

For many years, mobile users have been facing a common problem with recharge plans. Most telecom companies offer plans that last 28 days instead of a full 30 days. While this may seem like a small difference, it creates a bigger issue over time.

Now, this issue has reached the next level, and even the government is getting involved. Users have started questioning: If a month has 30 days, why are recharge plans only valid for 28 days? This concern has now become a national discussion.

Why Is This Happening?

The issue was recently raised in the Rajya Sabha by Raghav Chadha. He pointed out that because of 28-day recharge cycles, users end up recharging 13 times in a year instead of 12 times, which increases their overall cost.

He also raised another important concern about data usage. For example, if a user gets 1.5 GB data per day but only uses 1 GB, the remaining data is wasted. He suggested that unused data should either:

  • Be carried forward to the next day, or
  • Be offered as a benefit in the next recharge

This would make mobile plans more user-friendly and fair.

Demand to End 28 Day Recharge Plans

There is a growing demand to completely remove 28 day recharge plans.

Another issue highlighted is related to keypad phone users. These users often do not use the internet, yet they are forced to pay for plans that include data. This leads to unnecessary expenses.

Raghav Chadha also questioned telecom policies, saying:

  • If the SIM card and phone belong to the user,
  • Why are incoming calls and SMS stopped immediately after recharge expires?

He suggested that basic services like incoming calls and SMS should continue for at least one year, even without an active recharge.

What Do TRAI and the Government Say?

The matter has been taken seriously by the government. Jyotiraditya Scindia, the Minister of Communications, acknowledged the issue and asked telecom companies to consider introducing 30-day recharge plans as a priority.

At the same time, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has already instructed telecom companies to:

  • Offer 30-day and monthly validity plans,
  • Provide better flexibility to users

However, telecom companies still have the freedom to decide the pricing and conditions of these plans.

Can 28 Day Recharge Plans Become 30-Day Plans?

There is a strong possibility that 28 day  recharge plans may soon be replaced by 30-day plans, especially if the government puts pressure on telecom companies.

If this happens, users may benefit in several ways:

  • Only 12 recharges per year instead of 13
  • Better value for money
  • Possible data carry-forward options
  • More user-friendly plans

However, it depends on whether telecom companies fully accept and implement TRAI’s recommendations.

Conclusion

The demand to replace 28 day recharge plans with 30-day plans is growing stronger. With government support and user pressure, the telecom industry may soon introduce more fair and transparent plans.

If implemented, this change will be a big win for mobile users, helping them save money and get better services.

Now, it remains to be seen how quickly telecom companies take action—and how much benefit users will actually receive.
